Hamish Coates is dedicated to improving higher education quality and productivity through research, leadership and innovation. He is a Tenured Professor at Tsinghua University’s Institute of Education, and Director of the Higher Education Division. He is a Principal Advisor at Wells Advisory. Hamish is an expert in large-scale evaluation, education policy design, institutional strategy, assessment methodology, learner engagement, productivity analysis, and academic work and leadership. Spanning 20 years Hamish has led 100 influential projects, worked across 50 countries, authored 20 books/monographs, 150 academic papers and 100 reports, procured over AU$26 million in funding, run hundreds of conferences/workshops, delivered 350 keynotes and invited presentations, and generated ongoing revenue streams. He has an h-index of 40, over 8,300 citations, and is sought internationally as a speaker. From 2013 to 2017 he was Professor of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne. He was Founding Director of Higher Education Research at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) from 2006 to 2013, and between 2010 and 2013 also Program Director at the LH Martin Institute for Tertiary Leadership and Management. He held earlier roles at Graduate Careers Australia and the Assessment Research Centre. He has held honorary appointments at leading international organisations.
